The term "kolam" is Tamil in origin and means designs specifically intended to be drawn at one's home threshold.
All the Kolams (கோலம்) are done with rice flour (pets safe) or with limestone powder which is very smooth to slightly coarse in texture. Typical Kolam Powder (கோலம் மாவு) are available at all South Indian stores across US.
